First thing’s first; what is Blazer Boosters? If you don’t know what they are, you are about to learn. Blazer Boosters is the fundraising part of athletics. They find ways to raise the money needed to continue all of our Division I programs.

Since the debacle with football in December of 2014 the alumni, students and city of Birmingham have raised some money – a lot of money actually. People have really put their money where there mouth is, and that is absolutely fantastic.

Before football, bowling and rifle were reinstated on June 1st, 2015 over $18 million was pledged to UAB Athletics to explicitly support these teams – that is no small feat.

Not only was this money pledged, the Finish the Drive program started by the Athletics Department this past August has raised over $5 million. The point of this program is to build all new facilities for every team on campus. Having been at the meeting I can tell you this is huge for UAB. There are plans for everything from football facilities to tennis courts to a band practice field.

There was a goal for January 1 of $4.5 million, but it was surpassed as $5 million was raised. Let that sink in … $5 million was raised since August, just four short months ago. Over 1,500 Boosters have donated to contribute to this total. Not only are they donating, but the Blazer Booster membership is growing too. They gained 36.4 percent more members than were present in 2014, and 105 percent more than the last 10 years.

So what does all this mean? It means that you, the fan, are supporting all athletic teams on campus. You are being more than just “the vocal minority,” you are stepping up and making UAB the best school it can be on and off the field/court.

Where is all this money going? All of this money is being used to supply new state-of-the-art facilities, athletic scholarships, cost of living, and so on for our student athletes.

In summary, the Blazer family is contributing majorly to the financial advancement of UAB athletics. Your support has been seen and heard all over the nation and has done something that has never been done anywhere else, so continue to donate and be a part of history!
