It looked like the Blazers (15-3, 5-0) were going to have an easy one against Charlotte (4-13, 1-4) as they were up by as much as 16 points in the second half, but it took a floater by Robert Brown with three seconds left to give UAB the 74-72 win.
The dramatic victory also kept UAB’s winning streak alive and pushed it to 12 with a chance to break the school record on Thursday at home against Rice.
The Blazers had four players finish in double-figures led by Brown with 18. Dirk Williams scored 15 and Chris Cokley chipped in with 14 points. William Lee picked up a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The game was pretty even through the first four minutes as the Blazers took an 11-9 lead into the first media timeout. UAB had stretched its lead out to seven points at the 11:38 mark thanks to a three-pointer by Dirk Williams.
The 49ers kept battling though and were back within two at the under eight timeout. The Blazers then went on an 8-0 run to take a 32-22 lead. Another Williams three-pointer gave the Blazers their largest lead of the game at 39-26 at the under four timeout. Robert Brown would hit a three of his own with two second left in the half to make sure the Blazers went into the break up 13 points.
After a couple of threes by Charlotte to start the second half the Blazers went on a 6-0 run to take a 55-39 lead into the first media timeout of the second half.
The 49ers cut the lead to 10 by the under 12 timeout and cut it all the way down to seven points at the 7:24 mark. A layup by Charlotte at the 5:23 mark made things interesting as it brought the 49ers within four points.
UAB settled down and went on 6-0 run to stretch the lead back out to 10. However, the 49ers would not go away and brought the Blazer lead to just three points with 1:26 left, and then a three pointer by Charlotte with 39 seconds left tied up before Brown hit the game-winning shot.
The Blazers shot 44 percent from the field and hit 10-of-20 from beyond the arc.
The game shouldn’t have been as close as it was, but it tells you a lot about this team that they hung in there on the road and got the win in the final seconds.
UAB will be back home on Thursday when they take on the Rice Owls at 8:30 p.m. Central. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
