Saturday 2/6 Games

Marshall @ UTSA

You’d think putting up 108 points in regulation on the road would more than guarantee a win. It hasn’t been confirmed, but, my suspicions are UTEP and Marshall broke a lot of Conference USA records Thursday night. UTSA has had more than 100 points scored on them three times this season. It could happen again Saturday when the Herd comes to town.

Louisiana Tech  @ North Texas

Even though I picked Rice to upset La Tech, I think the Bulldogs are trending in the right direction at the right time. The Bulldogs have won four in a row and North Texas does not have the defense to keep that streak from increasing. La Tech will have a lot of momentum when Middle Tennessee and UAB come to town next week.

I’d pick Western in this game if it was played on Thursday. UTEP will be honoring their 1966 Texas Western National Championship team Saturday night and El Pasoans will be filled to the brim of the Don Haskins Center. I would expect another close game for the Miners given that they have trouble separating. UTEP only has one double-digit win in their four Conference USA wins.

ODU @ Charlotte

This is another 50/50 game and Vegas agrees with ODU at a 1/2 point favorite. Both of these teams desperately need to get off to a good start in February. With a win, the Monarchs could still have a top four Conference USA finish within grasps. With a loss, they’ll be sitting at .500 in conference play. I typically give ODU the advantage in toss up games because of their experienced guard play and will again in this game. However, they are going to have a heck of a time containing Charlotte’s Big Joe Uchebo.

FIU @ Middle Tennessee State

I expected more out of Florida Atlantic Thursday in their loss at MTSU. The Blue Raiders killed them with balance having four players in double figure scoring. FIU gave UAB all they wanted in a close loss in Birmingham on Thursday. Expect them to do the same in Murfreesboro Saturday. FIU’s Draper and MTSU’s Upshaw are the two best interior scoring forwards I’ve seen in Conference USA play this year. The key for FIU will be keeping Middle off the three-point line, which I don’t think they have the personnel to do.

Southern Miss @ Rice

At some point I’ll stop picking Southern Miss on the road. The Golden Eagle’s 16 point loss at North Texas was closer than the score reveals. The teams were tied at 31-31 in the second half before the Mean Green imposed their will with forward Jeremy Combs. Rice put up a good fight against La Tech before submitting late in the game. Both Rice and Southern Miss prefer a quick paced offensive game. I’m going with Rice strictly because they are the home team in this toss up.

Florida Atlantic won’t put up the fight FIU did Thursday night. The Owls will play a true center, but he’ll pale in comparison to Adrian Diaz. The Blazers should get back on track offensively and put this one away easily in front of a large home crowd at the annual Bartow Classic.
