UAB Softball returns to the field tomorrow and plays at #25 South Alabama. Coming off of its sixth consecutive season of 30 wins or more, the Blazers are led be reigning Conference USA Player of the Year Caitlin Attfield, and returns five players who were in the starting lineup a year ago.
At the helm is Coach Marla Townsend who is entering her 17th season as head coach of the Blazers. The softball team has made the NCAA Tournament in two of the last three seasons, and if UAB makes it this year it would be the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
UAB will pride itself with a tough out-of-conference schedule. The Blazers will play the defending national champions Florida in a tournament in Orlando. They also will play in-state Auburn and Alabama, who made appearances in the tournament last year.
All-in-all, the Blazers will play 15 teams who made the tournament last year. This will not only pay off when Conference USA play comes around, but also when the NCAA Tournament selection comes around.
Returning for their senior year is a talented group of Kelly Britt, Ashley Johnson, and Sara Beth Williamson. Look for these – along with Attfield – to be key contributors for the Blazers this year.
Senior shortstop Attfield was recently name the the 21st best offensive player in the nation by Fastpitch News. Last year she hit .473 and scored 43 runs. Williamson was second on the team in average at .407, and she led the team in home runs with 11 and RBIs with 45.
Returning on the mound will be junior Cara Goodwin who had a record of 13-6 last year with an ERA of 3.19 and struck out 108 batters over 133.2 innings pitched.
The Blazers will have plenty of midweek games, as fans are encouraged to come out and support. The longest homestand of the year begins March 22 and end April 5, where the Blazers will play seven out-of-eight games at home.
UAB fans if you get a chance, go out and support this team who has had plenty of success in recent years and looks to continue that in 2016.
