Week 7 of Conference USA play continues with six games tonight.
UTSA @ FAU
Florida Atlantic will be grateful to return to Boca Raton after suffering two double-digit losses at Middle Tennessee and UAB. The Owls have a chance to win two games this week with UTSA and UTEP coming to town. They split the series with the pair on the road just two weeks ago defeating the Roadrunners and losing to the Miners. FAU is 4-3 this season at home with all four wins coming in conference play. The Owls leading scorer Adonis Fowler is questionable due to concussion symptoms. He will be vital if FAU wants to come away with two wins during this home stretch.
North Texas @ ODU
It’s likely we’ll see one of the lowest scoring games in conference play this season in this game. Both of these Marshall has attempted more threes than these two teams combined. Both the Monarchs and the Mean Green love to drive to the basket with their guards and forwards. UNT defeated La Tech last Saturday and fouled out three of their players and attempted 40 free throws. ODU is on a three game win streak and I think it will continue Thursday in a slug fest.
Rice @ Charlotte
Charlotte is in the midst of a three-game home stand. They dropped their first game in a heart breaker to ODU last Saturday in over time. The 49ers have shown they can be one of the top seven teams in Conference USA. They’ll need to sweep these next two home games against Rice and North Texas to give themselves a shot at getting one of the coveted top seven Conference USA Tournament seeds.
UTEP @ FIU
The two teams are coming off of polar opposite performances in week 6. UTEP won two emotional home games against Marshall and Western Kentucky. Conversely, FIU lost to UAB and Middle Tennessee on the road by a combined five points. FIU defeated UTEP in El Paso by 10 points just three weeks ago. I think the Miners have begun to find their stride and will leave Florida this week with two wins.
UAB @ Southern Miss
Southern Miss and six other CUSA teams are separated by a game or less. The 7th, 6th, and 5th seed of the Conference USA Tournament gets to face a double-digit seed in the second round. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles they’ll likely lose ground this week in the chase. They’ll likely be double-digit home dogs in both games to UAB and Middle Tennessee.
Middle Tennessee @ Louisiana Tech
Every week we have one or two 50/50 games. This is this week’s version. The Bulldogs could have been sitting on a five-game win streak if they’d taken care of business in Denton against North Texas Saturday. Now, they are tied for fourth in the standings with the two best teams in the conference coming to Ruston. I’m going to pick the Bulldogs only because they’ve only lost one home game as Conference USA members.
- Home Teams — 4 Wins
- Road Teams — 2 Wins
