Difficult Schedule Continues for UAB Softball as They Play in Citrus Classic This Weekend

The 1-5 UAB softball team has already faced three top 25 teams in the early going, getting shutout in each of those games, and this weekend they’ll face three more in the Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla.

To start things off they’ll play a 3-1 College of Charleston team on Friday at 10 a.m. Central. Then at 2:30 they’ll take on the number one team in the country and defending Women’s College World Series champions in the Florida Gators. The defending champs are 6-0 early in the season.

On Saturday they’ll take on Stetson at 10 a.m. to start the day. The Hatters are 4-1 on the season and will have faced Georgia and College of Charleston before taking on the Blazers in the Classic. Next UAB will take on the 19th ranked Missouri Tigers. They have yet to play a game this year, but will have faced Jacksonville State and Elon before their meeting against the Blazers at 2:30 on Saturday.

UAB will finish out the weekend at 11:15 a.m. Central against 10th ranked Georgia. The Bulldogs are 4-0 on the year and will have already faced Omaha, Stetson, Stephen F. Austin and Jacksonville State in the Classic.

JoJo Fallen will hope to stay hot at the plate as she’s 7-for-16 through the first six games, while the other Blazer bats try to get going. Madison Hir will also try to keep things rolling after giving up just four earned runs in her first three starts.

It’s obvious the Blazers did not get out to the start to the season they were hoping for, but they have another opportunity this weekend to prove that they are an NCAA Tournament team.

The UAB Women’s basketball team will carry their three-game winning streak into Sunday’s contest against Middle Tennessee at Bartow Arena.

Like the men’s team, the lady’s team will get a break this Thursday and watch the other teams in the conference beat on each other. Then they’ll try and beat the Blue Raiders who currently own the longest winning streak in the conference having won eight in a row.

Chelsee Black will try and build upon her good game against La Tech last time out when she put up 18 points, which is five above her team-leading season average of 13.1 points a game. Brittany Winborne will play a key role in the Blazers pulling off the upset as she is now averaging a double-double a game.

Come out and support your UAB Lady Blazers after church on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. Central.
