Lady Blazers Lose Close Game in Overtime to MTSU

The UAB women’s basketball team nearly ended MTSU’s 8-game winning streak at home on Sunday as they lost a tough one in overtime 77-72.

The Blazers held a two point advantage at halftime, but MTSU was able to make up that ground in the second half and sent the game to overtime where they outscored the Blazers 11-6.

Deanna Kuzmanic led the Blazers in points with 19, while Brittany Winborne had a monster game scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high 23 rebounds. Chelsee Black chipped in 13 points as well for UAB.

This was a difficult loss for the Lady Blazers, but they fought hard and almost pulled off the upset against a very good MTSU team.

They’re next game will come against Marshall on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Central. The Blazers now sit at 13-12 overall and 6-8 in the conference with four games left – the final two being at Bartow Arena.

The UAB softball team (3-8) picked up two wins over the weekend in the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla.

The weekend started out with a 5-2 win over the College of Charleston. Megan Smith got the win after allowing just 2 earned runs over 3 innings, and then Cara Goodwin shut the door tossing four scoreless innings. JoJo Fallen led the way at the plate going 2-3 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs and a home run. Sara Beth Williamson went deep in this game as well.

After giving up 5 runs in the first inning against no. 1 ranked Florida, the Blazers hung tough, but eventually lost 8-0 in five innings. The Blazers only managed three hits against the defending Women’s College World Series champions.

The Blazers bounced right back and beat Stetson 3-2. Goodwin tossed a complete game for UAB, giving up just 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts. Caitlin Attfield, JoJo Fallen, Kelly Britt and Ashley Johnson all picked up two hits in the game. Britt led the team with 2 RBIs in the contest.

UAB faced 13th ranked Missouri in their fourth game of the weekend and lost 12-5. Attfield, Fallen and Johnson each picked up two hits in this one as well, with Attfield scoring 2 runs.

In the final game of the weekend the Blazers lost to 10th ranked Georgia 10-0 in five innings. The Bulldogs Chelsea Wilkinson threw a 5-inning perfect game to shutout UAB.

Overall I would say it was an OK weekend for UAB softball. They won the games they were supposed, and gained more experience against some of the top teams in the nation. Had they picked up a win over Missouri or Georgia I would have said it was a great weekend.

Softball will take the week off to prepare for another difficult round of games this upcoming weekend as they’ll head to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on Bradley, Hofstra and 13th ranked Florida State.
