This is a difficult postgame to write as none of us envisioned this amazing season ending so disappointingly, but that’s how this game goes.
The fact that UAB lost to Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament 88-77 doesn’t do anything to diminish just how good this Blazer team is. They set a school record for wins in a season with 26 and only lost two conference games on their way to a regular season championship.
Unfortunately, because of the perception – and reality – of the conference as being weak, one game decides the fate of UAB’s 2016 season. And instead of dancing in the NCAA Tournament, the Blazers will try and finish the season on a positive note in the NIT.
Every team wants to go to the NCAA Tournament, even if you lose in the first round, but going to the NIT gives the Blazers a chance to play a few more games and earn back the respect they deserve.
Plus, there’s a good chance we get to see senior Robert Brown in a few more games. He definitely poured his heart out in the loss to WKU playing 36 minutes and scoring 23 points before fouling out with a minute and a half left.
So while we won’t be in the big tournament, I’m looking forward to hopefully watching Brown play a few more times as he tries to carry them to an NIT title.
Once the season is finally over, I’ll look back and realize just how much I enjoyed watching this team play. Once the NCAA Tournament is over and the disappointment of this loss has extinguished, I think we all will remember just how amazing this season was, and how bright the future is for UAB basketball.
