The UAB Baseball team (9-12, 2-1) picked the right time to play its best game of the year as they shutout a ranked Alabama (13-7, 2-1) team 8-0 on Tuesday night, while out-hitting the Crimson Tide 12-4 in the contest.

After going down in order in the first inning, Griffin Gum got the party going with a bunt single to start the bottom of the second. Carter Pharis reached on a fielder’s choice when Gum slid to avoid the tag at second (see in video below).

With one out Riley McCown got the Blazers on the board with a 2-RBI double. Then with two outs Jared Nixon doubled home a run, and Brewer Hicklen followed him with an RBI single giving the Blazes a 4-0 lead.

That would prove to be all UAB would need as Adam Lamar, Kyle Davis, StephenBaggett and Matthew Calvert combined to throw a 4-hit shutout.

The Blazers would add single runs in the third and fourth innings, and two more in the seventh to put the Crimson Tide away for good.

Hickeln and Nixon both finished the game with 3 hits.

This was by far the most complete game UAB has played all year as they pitched well, hit well and played good defense.

Riley McCown in particular shined on defense making two spectacular diving catches.

The few times that Alabama did threaten on offense, the defense came up with a big play to shut them down.

Hopefully this will give the Blazers some confidence as they go on the road to face another ranked opponent in Florida Atlantic this weekend.

But for now, we’re going to enjoy this dominating win over Alabama!
