IMG_4736The title says it all for this game. UAB was handed 13 (yes you read that right) THIRTEEN walks, including 4 batters hit by pitches on the way to an easy 12-2 win Tuesday evening.

Overall analysis of the game

The game got off to a slow and rocky start for UAB. There was nothing doing for either side in the first. However, in the second, A&M was able to score 2 runs off of a couple of hits from UAB starter Austin Thomas. During those two innings, Thomas gave up 3 hits with 2 earned runs, while striking out one.

In the bottom half of the second inning, UAB took the lead by scoring 3 runs. UAB roughed up A&M starter Caleb Roberts. He went 2 innings giving up 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks and 2 strike outs.

From the second inning on, the Blazers never looked back. UAB scored four in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the eighth to an easy 12-2 victory.

UAB tallied 9 hits to A&M’s 8, but it was the walks that secured the victory. UAB even pulled out a triple steal twice to get two balk calls.

UAB used the later part of the game to get valuable playing time to some bench players, and even used seven pitchers on the night with no one throwing more than 2 innings. Overall, a very great win for the Blazers who improve to 10-15 on the year.

Surprise of the year so far

Griffin Gum. My goodness what a speedster for a fairly large guy. Every game I have been to, Gum has laid down at least one bunt single. I mean, come on, batting clean up and coach gives you a green light to bunt, you know you have to be quick. It seems no team has read a scouting report coming into games because he does it almost every game.

Also, he gets it done in the outfield. He made a couple of impressive plays tonight ranging all over right field. Hands down my favorite player so far.

UAB looks to to pick it up in Conference USA play this weekend hosting WKU in a weekend series.

Come out and support your Blazers!
