As you may know, UAB is searching for a new basketball coach.
Rob Ehsan, who was an assistant all four years under Jerod Haase, appears to be the leading candidate for the job. Many former players of the Blazers and almost every player on the current roster has endorsed Ehsan to be the next coach.
The other candidate is Auburn associate head coach, Chuck Person. “The Rifleman” – who played at Auburn and had a long stint in the NBA – is set at least to have an interview for the job later this week, according to AL.com, which comes at no surprise.
Person and UAB AD Mark Ingram are set to meet in Houston, the site of this year’s Final Four. Seems rather odd since Birmingham and Auburn are only 12o miles apart.
Ehsan apparently had his interview yesterday, also according to AL.com.
UAB AD Mark Ingram has told AL.com that they have had calls “from all corners of the basketball community.” Many assistants, both from college and the NBA, have been linked to the UAB job.
Jeff Goodman, from ESPN who broke the news first about Haase leaving for Stanford, tweeted saying, “Sounding like it will come to down to Rob Ehsan or Chuck Person for the UAB gig.” Kind of surprising as many names have been thrown around, and now it is sounding like a two-man race.
If one were to ask a UAB fan who they wanted to be the next coach, they’d say Rob Ehsan in a heartbeat. Many of the diehard UAB fans have flooded Twitter with #Blazers4Ehsan. Ehsan was instrumental in getting most of the guys on the roster to come to the Southside, and he was also instrumental in what Coach Haase did during the games.
Ehsan may have the UAB faithful’s support, but one would be foolish not to listen to Chuck Person as he also has been instrumental in what Bruce Pearl is trying to do to bring back the Auburn basketball program to relevance.
One has to think Birmingham native and Arkansas assistant coach TJ Cleveland still has a shot as his name has been linked to the job ever since it became available.
Going down the stretch, it looks like Ehsan may be the leader in the clubhouse, with Person right on his heels.
Anything can happen in a coaching search, and you never know who may throw his name in the ring. Stay tuned as the coaching search continues for UAB, but I would expect an announcement sometime next week.
