UAB softball got its first win against a ranked/receiving votes opponent on Tuesday night when they went to Starkville, Miss. and knocked off (RV) Mississippi State.
While I was not there, I was keeping up with it on twitter so here is how the performance went. Caitlin Attfield got things started in the first by taking the first pitch and getting a hit. Two ground outs got her to third, and two walks followed to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Attfield (because she runs like a 4.2-40. There’s no way to beat her on a play).
Ashley Johnson then drove in 2 runs. That would be all of the scoring for UAB, although they loaded the bases the next inning again, but a double play ended that.
However, that was all they needed.
Hot pitching hands showed up Tuesday night. Megan Smith, who has been roughed up occasionally, bounced back with a huge performance on SEC television. She allowed 2 runs off only 6 hits and was relieved by Cara Goodwin.
Goodwin was untouchable. She had no hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk. Stellar defense also helped in this win.
What a great gutsy, much needed win for UAB softball on national TV.
Ashley Johnson was very impressive both this past weekend and Tuesday night. She has been seeing the ball very well recently and getting quality at bats. Last weekend she had an outstanding performance both behind the plate and hitting against Charlotte, and Tuesday night she adds to her RBI total with two very important runs.
What a great win ladies!
UAB looks to keep the momentum going into the weekend as they host the Marshal Thundering Herd. There are plenty of softball and baseball games this weekend, and the weather will be beautiful. No reason not to come out and support your Blazers.
