UAB split a double header with the Marshall Thundering Herd Saturday afternoon. Game 1 went UAB’s way as they won 3-1. The second game went to the Herd as the won 4-3 in 9 innings.

Game 1 Recap

There was nothing doing for either side in the first couple of innings. UAB starting pitcher, Cara Goodwin, was able to hold the Herd’s bats pretty quiet in the first two. In the third inning, Goodwin allowed her only run of the game. She ended up going the distance with 4 hits and 5 Ks.

UAB had the start of a 2 out rally in the third going, but some controversy happened. Attfield hit a slapper to shortstop and beat it out, while Fernandez got to second. However, Fernandez was pushed off of the bag and tagged out ending the inning.

UAB would overcome it though as they got one in the 4th. Then Ashley Johnson came up in the 6th and knocked a 2 RBI shot to secure the 3-1 victory.

Players of the Game

I have to give this to both Goodwin and Johnson. Cara Goodwin had an impressive game on the mound. While she did allow a run, she had some hitters just guessing at what she was throwing. She wasn’t giving Marshall much of a chance to do anything. She also had 5 K’s today. She can be an absolute strike out machine at times.

On offense, I would say Ashley Johnson has been great at driving in runs lately. She added 2 in this game, which would be the game winning runs. She has nerves of steel. She got up there and took one to left for an easy 2 RBI double. Really impressed by her the past five games.

Game 2 Recap

The Marshall bats came to life this game. UAB gave up 15 hits and had to use two pitchers this game. Starter, Megan Smith, was tagged for 9 hits and 3 runs, but she did strike out 3.I will say, most of these came in a crazy 3rd inning.

Marshall scored 3 runs in the third all while playing small ball. They caught UAB sleeping to get a couple of stolen bases and bunt singles that lead to RBI’s.

However, UAB cracked down. Madison Hir came in to replace Smith and did well allowing 4 hits and 1 run.

UAB finally got it going in the 6th again. Two singles put Williamson and Warren on base with Johnson up to bat. What does she do? Jack one out of the park with the wind blowing in her face to tie the game.

This would go to the 9th before more controversy. After a single and two stolen bases from Herd’s D’Grazio, Green appeared to be thrown out at first. However, the ump did not agree and D’Grazio scored the winning run for Marshall

Player of the Game

It’s getting repetitive, but this has to go to Ashley Johnson again. She hit a three run home run to tie the game. Also, behind the plate she was excellent. She caught 2 runners stealing and was very close to getting a couple of pick offs

All-in-all it was a pretty decent day for UAB. Hope to see UAB get the series win at 12 tomorrow. Come out and support your Blazers!
