After getting swept by probably the best team in the conference in Florida Atlantic on the road earlier, the Blazers (12-20,4-8) had to get at least one win against the next best team in Conference USA in Rice (20-11 ,9-3), and they managed to do just that this past weekend.

In three competitive games, UAB baseball picked up a 6-2 win over the Rice Owls on Saturday thanks to another solid performance from Ryan Ruggles. The lefty went 5.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts. Thomas Lowery came on in the sixth and went the rest of the game to close it out.

Brewer Hicklen was brilliant at the plate going 4-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Griffin Gum scored twice and brought in 2 runs, while Carter Pharis picked up 2 RBIs as well in the win.

The Blazers dropped the other two games 7-3 and 3-0 respectively. In the 7-3 loss on Friday Hicklen picked up 2 hits to start off his hot weekend. On Sunday UAB reached base just three times with 2 hits and a walk.

The Blazers now sit tied for ninth place in Conference USA, which would put them out of the conference tournament, but on the bright side, they’ve already played four of the top seven teams in the conference.

This week the Blazers will travel to Tuscaloosa on Tuesday to try and beat the Crimson Tide for the second time this season. Then they’ll face the team with the best record in the conference in Southern Miss (25-8, 11-1) over the weekend at Young Memorial Field.
