After losing its first Conference USA series last week to La Tech, the Blazers bounced back this weekend and took 2-of-3 for its fourth series win. UAB won both games of the double-header on Saturday and unfortunately lost game 3 on Sunday.

Game 1 Recap

All you need to know is the middle of the line up for UAB is dangerous. It came up big in this first game against FIU. With UAB down 1-0 in the sixth, Mary Warren stepped up and sent one out of the park. Then, catcher Ashley Johnson gunned down an FIU runner to send this game into extra innings. In extras, Johnson came up with a walk-off 2-run home run to send UAB to a nice 3-1 win. Excellent defense and timely hitting were big in this game.

Game 2 Recap

The second game of the double-header started off a little rocky in the first for UAB. FIU’s Texeira hit a solo home run. Worth noting, she is two home runs away from FIU’s career record, and she is only a junior. But, UAB came back and it was none other than Ashley Johnson. She was then followed by Kelly Britt who has been coming on strong lately, getting some big time hits. The hits kept coming as Hannah Lee hit her first career home run and picked up 3 RBIs. Major congrats on your first home run! UAB added another run with a string of doubles from Fallen and Williamson in the second. UAB would go on to get three more runs and win 9-1 in 5 innings.

Game 3 Recap

Sunday was just not UAB’s day. Pitcher, Madison Hir, had problems finding the strike zone unfortunately leading to a few easy base runners. Not to look down, she has had some great outings lately, it just wasn’t her day and it continued to Megan Smith. All credit to FIU bats Sunday they came alive for 14  hits. FIU’s pitchers created 12 fly outs from the UAB lineup in game 3. A lot of those were soft pop ups in the infield. UAB was down 6-1 and able to rally to get it to 6-3, but FIU got those runs back and more. It was just a tough down, but I know UAB will bounce back.

With this weekend, UAB is second in the Conference USA west standings behind UTEP. This sets up an awesome match for first place next weekend at UTEP. The Miners have won four straight series. Time to go get first place UAB!

UAB returns home April 26th to play Chattanooga.

Go Blazers!
