Get your brooms out Blazer fans, both UAB baseball and softball swept their three game weekend series. Baseball won 10-1, 5-2, 8-0 against MTSU and softball won 10-2, 9-6, 4-2 against UTEP.

Baseball

Game 1 had some stellar pitching from Tanner Graham. Graham went 6 innings with 5 hits and 5 strike outs. UAB tallied 8 hits but got 10 runs. They really did a lot at the plate this game. The most noteworthy being that they were extremely patient drawing 8 walks. Catcher, Mitch Williams, had a great game going 1-2 with 3 RBI and 2 walks. Hard to find much wrong with this game.

Game 2 saw a little more battling between the two teams. UAB’s starting pitcher, Ryan Ruggles, was able to go deep into the game giving up 4 hits and 5 strike outs. Thomas Lowery was able to come on and get the save. Mitch Williams again had a nice game at the plate going 2-4. Also, the top of the line up got some good production. While 6 men left on base is a little too much, UAB’s pitching wasn’t giving up much. Another great game for the Blazers.

Game 3 was another awesome pitching game. Kyle Davis got his first start today going 5 innings without giving up a run and only 1 hit. Though the star of this game was Brewer Hicklen. Hicklen nearly hit for the cycle today going 4-4 with a home run shy of the cycle.

UAB comes out of the weekend in 7th place in CUSA. Top 8 go to the tournament. Keep it up guys.

Softball

Game 1 saw Cara Goodwin dealing. She finished the game with 8 strike outs and was absolutely on fire. The middle of the line up continues to be very effective. They came up with 6 hits and 5 RBIs. Mary Warren continues to be a dominate clean up hitter going 3-4. During the weekend she extended her on base streak to 21 straight games.

Game 2 was way more back and forth between the teams. UAB was able to put runs up early, but UTEP continued to knock on the door. However, in the 9th, UAB got two helping runs and that would be enough to shut the door. The big story of this game was that freshman pitcher, Tori Perkins, got her first career win. She came into the game and pitcher 4 outstanding innings to close the game only giving up 4 hits and a run.

Game 3 saw some outstanding defense from shortstop star Caitlin Attfield. She made a spectacular play on a sharply hit ball toward the hole in second. If that play isn’t on ESPN tonight, then shame on them. This was a very hard fought game. Down 2-1 in the 7th who comes up big time for UAB? Warren, that’s who. She belted a 2 run home run and Amy Waters added another run to secure the victory for UAB.

Softball returns home in FIRST PLACE in the west!

What a weekend for UAB

Go Blazers!
