NORFOLK, Va. — Winners of 5 of their last 6, the scorching hot Blazers take their show on the road to Old Dominion (25-16, 8-10) for a pivotal conference series. Following this series both the Monarchs and Blazers will have three conference series remaining. The top 8 teams of the 14 will be invited to participate in the CUSA Championship at the end of the season. Going in to this weekend ODU is in the 8th position and UAB is in the 6th position of the standings.

Coming in to this week’s series the Monarchs have lost 6 of their last 7 games. On Tuesday ODU dropped a home match to the defending NCAA Champion Virginia 8-4. It’s worth noting the Monarchs defeated the Cavalier’s 5-4 on the road on March 30.In addition to the impressive win over Virginia , ODU has defeated then ranked 1st and now currently 10th NC State on a neutral field in February.

Boasting an impressing 12-4 out of conference record some were beginning to believe the Monarchs could at minimum have a shot of an at-large invitation to the NCAA tournament. FAU, Rice, and FIU (auto bid) represented CUSA in the tournament last year. ODU swept WKU in their first CUSA series 3-0 but has since gone on to lose 4 of the next 5 conference series.

When the Blazers take field in Norfolk Friday afternoon expect freshman Tanner Graham (2-4) to take the mound. In Graham’s last start this past Saturday he pitched six scoreless innings striking out a career high five batters.

The left handed sophomore Ryan Ruggles (5-2) should be the starter for Coach Shoops squad for the Saturday afternoon tilt. Ruggles owns the second best ERA on the team allowing 2.72 runs per appearance.

Absent from the Middle Tennessee series was senior third baseman Esteban Tresgallo who is arguably the Blazers best slugger with 4 home runs on the season. At this time it’s unclear if he will appear in this weekend’s series.

BIRMINGHAM — After sweeping the UTEP Miners over the weekend 3-0 the Gals in Green appeared to be firing on all cylinders. Mid-week out of conference games at home against Chattanooga and on the road against (RV) Ole Miss resulted as what can be best described as a learning experience for the Blazers. UAB fell to the Mocs 3-0 in front of their home crowd Tuesday and again struggled to score against Ole Miss in a 5-0 loss in Oxford last night.

Despite the two unfavorable outcomes the Blazers were able to take some positives in to their home series against UTSA this weekend. Coach Townsend threw freshman pitcher Tori Perkins in to the flames last night for lack of better words. The Floridian will most certainly be better for the experience but the Rebel bats gave her a night to remember. In Perkins time on the mound, Ole Miss hit 3 triples and scored 5 runs. Perkins had trouble with her control from the start hitting a Rebel batter and throwing many pitches in to the dirt. As difficult a night as it was for Perkins, junior Madison Hir came in and shined in relief. Hir allowed no runs over the final 3.2 innings and allowed just one hit. Ole Miss pitcher Madi Osias broke the all time program season wins record (18) in her complete game 2 hitter outing.

The Roadrunners (18-28, 9-9) come to town hoping to finish strong in their final two conference series. UTSA is currently in the 5th position of six teams in the West. After winning their first two conference series over Charlotte and North Texas, the Roadrunners have dropped their last four.

UTSA’s bullpen is anchored by sophomore Lizzy Fox who is 8-9 on the season. Junior Randee Crawford is one the best power hitters in the conference. She’s hit 12 home runs this season and was first team all conference last season.
