DENTON, Tx. — The only thing tougher for Coach Marla Townsend than finishing runner up at the CUSA Softball Championship is having to say goodbye to her four seniors.

Per UAB.com: UAB’s senior class of Kelly Britt, Ashley Johnson, Sara Beth Williamson and Caitlin Attfield have won 127 games to date. Over their career, the quartet won the 2013 Conference USA Regular Season Title and made two NCAA Regional and one NCAA Super Regional appearances. The group has also set eight UAB career records.

Of the four super seniors, Caitlin Attfield will likely go down as one of the best Blazer softball players to ever play on the south side.

Watching Attfield play the game was a spectacle all in itself. During the Conference USA tournament, nearly every in-game UAB highlight tweeted out by the conference account was a fielding gem by the senior. She was respected by all of her opponents and loved by her teammates. So much so the conference put this video together for the departing Blazer great.

BIRMINGHAM — The Blazers final home stand of the 2016 season did not go as planned to say the least. UAB was swept in a three-game series by an FIU team that on paper was not as good as the weekends result revealed.

UAB will hit the road Tuesday for an out-of-conference game for the final time this season. The Blazers will take on the Auburn Tigers (22-30, 8-19) in hopes of ending their eight-game losing streak.

The final Conference USA series for the Blazers will be at Charlotte starting next Friday. UAB’s only hope of getting in to the eight team CUSA Tournament is winning at least two games against the 49ers and hoping Western Kentucky loses at least two in their final series, which will be against Florida Atlantic.

MARANA, Az. — The NCAA men’s regionals will begin tomorrow at six sites across the country. The Blazers find themselves in the Marana Regional with 13 schools that include past NCAA champions Stanford (7x) and Wake Forest (3x).

The top five teams in each of the six regionals will advance to the national championship, to be played May 27-June 1 at Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.

Golfweek’s Brentley Romine picked these teams to advance to the national championship out of the Marana Regional.
