In my years of following UAB softball, this might have been one of the hardest schedules UAB has every had to play. Coach Townsend sent a message to the girls early saying if UAB wants to be the best then they have to play the best.
With the 2nd toughest non-conference schedule in the country, they sure did set out to try to set themselves up for a bid to the NCAA tournament. However, the out of conference season was pretty tough on this team.
They came into the first weekend sitting at 8-16 still trying to figure out a good lineup. However, they did beat the eventual OVC champions, Jacksonville State, twice. A little later, they pulled off a huge upset over (RV) Mississippi State. UAB was able to blow it open in CUSA play. They won 5 of the 8 three-games series they played including a sweep of UTEP to get to first place. UAB finished 1st in the western side of the division and earned the No. 2 ranking in the CUSA tournament. They finished runner-up to No. 22 FAU.
Sara Beth Williamson, Caitlin Attfield, Ashley Johnson, and Kelly Britt, the senior class, have had amazing careers at UAB. Probably the most memorable run was the NCAA run that involved knocking off UCLA. They will be greatly missed at UAB.
The awards for this team have pilled in. Before the tournament started, Caitlin Attfield and Mary Warren were selected to the 1st all conference, while Ashley Johnson was selected 2nd team all conference. After the tournament, Caitlin Attfield was selected first team NCFA Midwest region, while both JoJo Fallen and Mary Warren were selected to the third team.
All-in-all it was a great performance from the team this year. I can’t wait to see what next year has in store for the team and hopefully see a deep tournament run.
