KANSAS CITY, MO — The 16th CBE Hall of Fame Classic field is set and UAB we’ll face the three-time national champion Kansas Jayhawks. This is Kansas’ (33-5) third appearance in the CBE tournament having won it in 2012 defeating St. Louis and Washington St.
The 2016 CBE field will also include Georgia (20-14) and George Washington (28-10). Per Kenpom.com, last season Georgia finished 70th and George Washington finished 47th and won the NIT.
UAB is 1-2 all-time against Kansas with their most recent meeting in the 2004 Sweet 16. The Blazers lone win over the Jayhawks came in 1984 at the Great Alaska Shootout with famed Larry Brown at the helm.
UAB upset the tournament favorites behind a dagger three-pointer from Blazer great Steve Mitchell with 28 seconds left. The 1984-85 Kansas Jayhawk basketball team included two now head coaches in Wake Forests’ Danny Manning and Maryland’s Mark Turgeon.
A Look At The Jayhawks
Perry Ellis, Wayne Selden Jr., Brannen Greene, Cheick Diallo, Jamari Traylor, Hunter Mickelson
As you can see, despite losing key pieces from their Elite Eight run last season, the Jayhawks are reloading with a killer recruiting class highlighted by the number one recruit in the nation Josh Jackson.
As usual Kansas will be favored to win the Big 12 despite the fact they’ll be putting a much different looking lineup on the court next season. Senior point guard Frank Mason will be Coach Self’s floor general, and in my opinion has the ability to have an All-American type year if he plays up to his potential.
Josh Jackson will likely be a lottery pick in the 2017 NBA draft and you’ll see in the video below Azubuike is going to a force in the paint.
