Evan Battey – After a month of picking up offers from schools such as Boston College, Seton Hall, & TCU – Battey has informed the UAB coaching staff that the Blazers are no longer in the mix. Boston College, Colorado, DePaul, Fresno State, Miami, New Mexico, Purdue, Seton Hall, & TCU are believed to be the schools he is most interested in.
Dedric Boyd – Released his Top 6 schools and the Blazers made the cut. Eastern Kentucky, Florida Gulf Coast, Louisiana Tech, Murray State, & South Alabama were the other schools to make his list.
Peyton Broughton – Released his Top four schools, which included UAB, Clemson, Eastern Kentucky, & UNC Asheville before later committing to Eastern Kentucky. UAB had not contacted Broughton since Coach Haase left for Stanford, so it is not a surprise he decided to go in another direction.
Garrison Brooks – The last month for Brooks has been a busy one. He continued to pick up big time offers from programs such as Baylor, Missouri, & SMU, while setting up some official visits as well. His first official visit will take place on September 2 at Texas A&M. He most recently took an unofficial visit to Arizona State (8/13) along with top UAB prospect, Alex Reese. Brooks has shown some interest in playing alongside both Alex Reese & another teammate from their Adidas National team, Jordan Usher. UAB is still expressing interest in Brooks, but feel much better about their chances of landing Reese. Brooks appears to be a little more open to attending a school farther away, while most believe Reese will stay closer to home.
Zack Bryant – The UAB coaching staff received a nice surprise when Zack Bryant announced on Twitter that he had committed to UAB. He had visited UAB the weekend before, but it was almost like he was never here – meaning he did not tweet anything about his visit and there were no stories recapping his visit. Clemson, Georgia, & Iowa State were all expecting to get a visit from Bryant, but the understanding now is that those plans have changed. The commitment could not have come at a better time as some of those aforementioned programs missed out on top point guard recruits (UGA lost their top guy to Louisville). That’s one thing the staff really sold to Bryant – he was clearly our number one target at point guard.
Justin Forrest – Picked up offers from Coastal Carolina & NJIT. With the Blazers landing their top PG target in Zack Bryant, chances are slim they’ll carve out a role for Forrest as well. Forrest is a very talented player and someone UAB had expressed quite a bit of interest in before Bryant committed.
Anthony Gaines – Released his Top six schools, which included Butler, Cincinnati, Dayton, George Washington, Michigan, and Northwestern. UAB did not make the cut.
Gabe Grant – Grant is the lone JUCO target for the Blazers at this time. The small forward from Three Rivers Community College boasts offers from UAB, Akron, Alcorn State, Colorado State, Houston, Milwaukee, Southern Illinois, and Tennessee Martin. At 6-foot-6, he is projected to play the small forward position at the Division 1 level. The key here is landing a JUCO player will help balance out the classes for UAB. If Grant commits, he’ll join the same graduating class as Deion Lavender & Thomas Smallwood.
Makhtar Gueye – Picked up an offer from UTEP. UAB was the first school to offer Gueye and he’s still on the coaching staff’s radar.
Elijah Joiner – Iowa State came on the scene late, but they are rumored to be the favorite to land Joiner – who is now also drawing interest from Minnesota and Missouri. Unlike Justin Forrest, the UAB coaching staff has not given up on the thought of landing both Zack Bryant & Elijah Joiner. Joiner is extremely high on the Blazers’ board and they’ll continue to fight off other top programs in hoping they can convince him to represent Chicago, Ill. down on the Southside.
Jamal Johnson – Set to take his first official visit to Georgia Tech on October 1. UAB, Butler, and Wake Forest are all in the mix as well. Johnson is still, in my opinion, UAB’s top shooting guard target. Johnson’s brother attends UAB and he was AAU teammates with several other top UAB prospects (Garrison Brooks and Alex Reese). I’d feel a lot better about UAB’s chances of landing Johnson if Reese commits, but the Blazers still have a shot regardless.
Herb Jones – Picked up an offer from Stanford. He had an unofficial visit at Georgia Tech earlier this month (8/13) and will unofficially visit Georgia this weekend (8/27). Not much has been said regarding Jones’ interest in UAB in quite some time, but UAB is still somewhat in the mix depending on how all the dominos fall.
Simeon Kirkland – Picked up an offer from Georgia Southern. Kirkland is not high on UAB’s board but is someone they have reached out to in the past.
Cameron Krutwig – Committed to Loyola. Krutwig is a guy I would have liked to see the Blazers get, but Loyola is a lot closer to home and presents an opportunity for him to see more immediate playing time.
Terrence Lewis – Committed to Iowa State. This is someone UAB really hoped to get a visit from, and the coaching staff at one point thought they were going to get one.
Josh Linder – The offer list continued to grow for Linder as he picked up offers from Charlotte, East Tennessee State, and Furman.
J.P. Moorman – Released his Top 5 schools, which included Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Rhode Island, Temple, & UNCW.
Tyler Polley – Cut his list down to five schools: Dayton, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, and UCONN. UAB would have really liked to make his list, but since he narrowed his options it allows the Blazers to look in another direction.
Alex Reese – Picked up an offer from Pittsburgh. Coach Stallings was recruiting him while at Vanderbilt. In terms of visits, as mentioned above, Reese took an unofficial to Arizona State earlier this month (8/13). He also had an unofficial visit at UA this past weekend (8/21) and will go back to UA for his official visit on October 1. Most believe Reese will in fact take all five of his official visits before arriving at a decision. These five official visits would be to Alabama, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Georgia, and UAB. Unless Reese can be convinced to play out-of-state with one of his close friends, I believe the decision is between Alabama and UAB. UAB provides the clear role and that is to take over William Lee’s spot in the rotation. Both have similar games, although Reese appears to be ahead of the game offensively. Reese would have plenty of opportunities to play against good competition (see UAB’s out-of-conference schedule for this upcoming year), while competing for conference championships.
Galin Smith – Released his list of top seven schools, which included UAB, Alabama, Kansas State, LSU, Memphis, Ole Miss, and Tulane.
Brian Thomas – Took an official visit to FGCU this past weekend. Not much has been said about Thomas since he took an unofficial visit here earlier this summer. He’s definitely on UAB’s radar so I’m sure they’re hopeful to get him on campus again some time soon.
Trey Doomes – Picked up offers from Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU) and Georgia Southern, and Georgia Tech. He also took an unofficial visit to Auburn earlier this month (8/14).
Trey Jemison – Jemison’s stock continues to rise as he picked up offers from Arkansas Little-Rock, Georgia, and Stanford.
Myreon Jones, Jr. – Picked up an offer from Arkansas Little-Rock.
Nassir Little – Picked up an offer from Auburn. Little is close friends with another c/o 2018 prospect for the Blazers, Ronaldo Segu. They have went on unofficial visits recently to Georgia (8/13), Georgia Tech (8/13), & UCF (8/19). Little and Segu have made the decision to play their senior seasons together at Orlando Christian Prep, so it’s possible they are going to be a package deal at the next level.
Berrick Jean Louis – Picked up offers from UAB, Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU), & North Florida. Took an unofficial visit to UCF this past weekend.
Chimezie “Mezzie” Offurum – Picked up offers from Indiana and Rutgers. The coaching staff has been in contact with Offurum as of late and is working on a future date to get him on campus for an unofficial visit.
Ronaldo Segu – Picked up an offer from North Florida. Segu is close friends with another c/o 2018 prospect for the Blazers, Nassir Little. They have went on unofficial visits recently to Georgia (8/13), Georgia Tech (8/13), and UCF (8/19). Little and Segu have made the decision to play their senior seasons together at Orlando Christian Prep, so it’s possible they are going to be a package deal at the next level.
Desi Sills – Committed to Arkansas. Another great get for previous UAB HC, Mike Anderson. He had also picked up offers from Arkansas Little-Rock, Missouri, & SMU since our last update.
