BIRMINGHAM — Though Coach Randy Norton is entering his 33rd women’s basketball coaching season, you have to get the feeling he feels more motivated now than ever. Coach Norton has reached the all important fourth year at UAB.
This season will feature all players who have been with Norton since their freshman seasons.
Joining the eight upper classman are seven freshman who we’ll introduce later in the preview.
Also fueling the excitement around the program is the arrival of two new assistant coaches, Michael Scott Jr. and Reagan Miller. The pair will be joining Coach Norton and Taren Martin who is entering her fourth season with the Blazers.
2015-16 In Review
Departing seniors Chelsee Black and Brittany Winborne leave massive shoes to fill as both averaged double digits in scoring and Winborne leading the team in total rebounds with 345. In addition to Black and Winborne, the leadership and experience of five additional seniors will also be leaving the Southside.
Despite the losses, UAB has a solid foundation to build off of. The Blazers other double-digit scorer, sophomore Deanna Kuzmanic, is poised to have another fantastic season to compliment her Conference USA All-Freshman honors from a year ago.
Joining Kuzmanic in leading the 16-17 squad will be 6-foot-1 redshirt junior and Birmingham native Keonna Farmer who was fourth in team scoring average with 6.2 points and second in rebounds with 4.4.
If you ask any Blazer fan, UAB’s Conference USA tournament run was cut too short last year. A half-court heave from Chelsee Black was waived off after further review. We’re sure Coach Norton and crew have moved on, as have we, but we’re not sure it was the right call.
See for yourself…
New Season New Players
It’s hard to beat a player who is both talented and intelligent. Coach Norton seems to have found six of them. The seventh freshman, Spanish guard Angela Vendrell, did not participate in summer classes.
When looking at the seven freshman, you’ll immediately notice the addition of three players with great size. Imani Johnson and Katelynn Thomas both measure 6-foot and Angela Vendrell is 6-2. The three freshman additions give Coach Norton six players over 6-foot.
The Blazer’s 2016-17 freshman class is easily one of the most highly touted in the program’s history.
