Alex Reese – Reese took an official visit at UAB on 9/3 and Georgia on 9/10. He is also scheduled to visit Alabama on 10/1. He had an in-home visit with UAB last Friday and another one with Alabama on Sunday.

Although Reese took an official visit to Georgia, this decision will come down to UAB & Alabama.

Jamal Johnson – Johnson took an official visit to UAB on 8/27 and to Memphis on 9/3. He also has official visits scheduled for Wake Forest on 9/23 & Georgia on 9/30. The Blazer coaching staff additionally had an in-home visit with him this past Friday. Per the Deacons Illustrated, Wake Forest’s Rivals site, Coach Danny Manning  and staff are making Johnson a high priority. The Deacon Illustrated believes they have a very good chance with Johnson and we believe they are UAB’s biggest threat.

Elijah Joiner – Joiner took an official visit to Illinois State on 8/27. They are thought to be the school who has been on him the longest. He has an official visit set for Iowa State on 9/30 and has been working on setting up a date to visit UAB some time this month. Arkansas Little-Rock, Ball State, Duquesne, Illinois-Chicago, Missouri, Northern Illinois, & Saint Louis are all hoping to get an official visit as well. Missouri was the most recent to offer.

UAB, Cincinnati, Illinois State, & Missouri all had in-home visits with him this past Friday.

Gabe Grant – Grant has had official visits at Southern Illinois on 8/27 and Houton on 9/10 & is coming to UAB this weekend. He is working on a date to visit Wichita State as well.

Grant is the next big time recruit to visit UAB this fall. It was first Zack Bryant, followed by Jamal Johnson, & lastly Alex Reese. Bryant committed while the other two are still making official visits. The UAB coaching staff is hopeful they can get a commitment from Grant this upcoming weekend.

Christian Negron – Negron has been finalizing his official visit schedule, which now consists of Oregon State on 9/17, DePaul on 9/30, & UAB (TBD). Bradley and TCU are both fighting to get a visit set up as well. Negron is a versatile player who has been working on his perimeter game. He had an impressive showing this past summer at the FIBA Americas Tournament finishing first in rebounding, tied for first in efficiency, second in blocked shots, ninth in scoring, and fourth in double-doubles.

Below is a highlight from the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which took place this past July in Chile. Negron was a member of the Puerto Rican national team. Current Blazer Nate Darling was a member of the Canadian national team.

Galin Smith – Smith has his four official visits lined up for Tulane (9/9-9/11), LSU (9/16-9/18), Alabama (9/23-9/25), & UAB (10/7-10/9).

Makhtar Gueye – Gueye took an unofficial visit to Grand Canyon on 8/27 and an official visit to Old Dominion on 9/3.

UAB was Gueye’s first offer, so they have been on him at least as long as everyone else. There’s still mutual interest, but UAB has not gotten a confirmed visit date yet.

Exavian Christon – In the month of August, Christon picked up an offer from Arkansas State and took an official visit to Arkansas Little Rock on 8/27. He first picked up an offer from UAB back in May and is definitely still on the Blazer coaching staff’s radar.

Joseph Lanzi – Lanzi took an unofficial visit to UAB on 8/25. He holds preferred walk-on offers from both UAB and Alabama. Lanzi is a 6-foot-4, 180 pound shooting guard from Chelsea High School. He has yet to receive any official Division 1 scholarship offers, but there’s a long list of schools who have expressed interest in him including: Alabama-Huntsville, Arkansas Little-Rock, Belmont, Brown, Cincinnati, Cornell, Loyola (MD), Penn, Samford, SIU-Edwardsville, Troy, William & Mary. If those schools weren’t an indicator, Lanzi is an impressive student-athlete – boasting a 4.1 GPA.

An under the radar development here is Lanzi’s relationship with 4-star recruit, Alex Reese. The two are very close having played for the same AAU organization, Team Carroll along with Jamal Johnson. Some believe they could be destined to play on the same team – most likely UAB or Alabama.

Alexis Yetna (new prospect) 6-foot-8, 185 pound power forward from Mt. Zion Prep in Baltimore, MD

  • Latest Update: UAB is scheduled to have an in-home visit with Yetna tomorrow. The France native’s recruiting took off this past spring when he picked up his first major offer from New Mexico. Since then, Yetna has gotten scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Drexel, Duquesne, Georgia, Old Dominion, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, Temple, Towson, & UCF. An offer from UAB could come as soon as tomorrow when the coaching staff meets with him face-to-face.

Garrison Brooks – Brooks took an official visit to Auburn on 9/3 along with Herb Jones and a group of Auburn c/o 2017 commits. Next came in-home visits from Arizona State, Georgia, & North Carolina. Roy Williams actually visited Brooks on Saturday at his high school and offered him on the spot.

It’s likely that UAB is no longer on Brook’s radar. The Blazers had a chance early on before his offer list imploded, but now some of the schools getting mentioned the most are: Arizona State, Auburn, Mississippi State, North Carolina, & Texas A&M.

In other news, the following players committed elsewhere: Josh Linder (Georgia State) & Brian Thomas (Florida Gulf Coast). Herb Jones released his Top 4 list of schools, which included Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, & Florida.

Below is a list of 10 players whom I believe are priorities for the UAB coaching staff and have medium to high interest in the Blazers (alphabetical order):

  • Zack Bryant – COMMITTED
  • Exavian Christion
  • Gabe Grant
  • Luis Hurtado
  • Jamal Johnson
  • Elijah Joiner
  • Gueye Mahktar
  • Christian Negron
  • Alex Reese
  • Galin Smith
