Holy cow what a close game against FAU. It seems like every time we play there it is super close, but we came away with the win. Now on to FIU.
Something I forgot to mention in my Quick Thoughts from the FAU game is that Denzell Watts has embraced the starting point gaurd spot very well, and Deion Lavender is absolutely thriving in the 2-spot. Deion’s dribble-drive jump shot from the top block is deadly.
The Panthers are not doing so hot this year either with an overall record of 4-15 (0-6 in C-USA). Before the FAU game, I would have had UAB big in this one, but the Blazers seem to have caught the turnover bug again. FIU also held MTSU’s offense to only 65 points and WKU to 69 points this season. If the Blazers can keep their hot shooting up, from both 3-point range as well as from the free throw line, and limit themselves to less than 13 turnovers, they should win pretty handily.

UAB started off its Florida road trip with a win over Florida Atlantic 80-78. The Owls kept it close, mainly due to the Blazers unforced errors and costly turnovers. UAB travels to Florida International Saturday night and they come in riding a five game winning streak. On stats alone the Panthers are the worst team in Conference USA coming in with a record of 4-15 after losing to Middle Tennessee on Thursday night. Don’t let that record deceive you as the Blazers always seem to struggle on this Florida road trip. For UAB, William Lee is playing out of this world. I would argue that he is the best player in the state of Alabama right now. Lee is doing it all, jump shots, three-pointers, and of course blocks. If he continues to play like this the Blazers will be a very tough team to play going forward. Scouting the Panthers they are lead by Donte McGill who leads the team with 18.9 points a game. McGill could give UAB problems if he gets hot. Like I said earlier these games always seem to be close no matter the records and I don’t see this game being any different. Hopefully the Panther players learned from last year that if Dirk Williams is driving in the lane they better get out of the way. This one will be closer than most think, but UAB win it’s sixth game in a row.
Score Prediction: UAB 77 FIU 70

I really thought I was about to jinx the Blazers by picking them against FAU, but UAB survived and the streak continues. However, the close win to FAU is a bit troubling; although I think the final score made it look closer than what it was. Were the Blazers playing anyone other than FIU I would be really worried about this one, but the Panthers have been terrible all year. It would take a horrible performance for UAB to drop this game. I am interested to see how Deion Lavender continues to grow in this role off the bench. If he continues to excel in that role it could be the difference in UAB going dancing this March.
Score Prediction: UAB 76 FIU 61
