UAB heads to Texas in sole possession of 2nd place in Conference USA. Every game the rest of the way is a big game for the Blazers if they want to repeat as regular season champs.

Saturday night was a complete beat down of Southern Miss as freshmen Nate Darling had a breakout game scoring 20 points as UAB won 87-43.

The first stop of the Texas road trip is in El Paso where the UTEP Miners await the Blazers. The Miners come in to the game with a 6-14 record having upset Marshall on Saturday night. As I have said before UAB should not let their record deceive them. They must show up, play their game, and handle their business if they want to come away with a win.

The Miners are led by Omega Harris ( has to be one of the coolest names in CUSA) which leads the team in scoring with 17.2 points per game. It’ll be a late tip so that could play a factor as UAB is normally ending their games around 9:00 PM CT.

Look for the Blazers to keep sharing the ball like they did Saturday night and keep getting good looks around the basket. As of late, they have been hot from 3-point land so we shall see if that continues.

A lot of people on social media are saying UTEP beats either UAB or Middle or both this weekend but I just don’t see it. The way UAB has played since starting 7-7 and how Middle has played all year spell trouble for -CUSA as a whole.

The road ain’t easy, but UAB gets it done in El Paso.

Who would have thought that UTEP would start the season out so poorly? Then again, who would have thought Nick would tear his ACL or that Texas beats us by 36.

This game is hard to predict, in my opinion. After starting the season with a 12 game losing streak, UTEP has won 3 of their last 4 and are now 4-4 in conference play. They probably should have beaten WKU as they held them to 19 (!!!!) points in the second half of their game. They also absolutely waxed Marshall 91-68. However, UTEP is as fickle as the Alabama weather. They barely scraped by FAU (so did we) and lost to Southern Miss.

UAB is not playing their best yet, I think, but they are certainly on their way. This week will be the toughest road test yet. Hakeem will be back and, hopefully, 100% so our defense will back to full power. Haha looked slow and potentially sick to me against Southern Miss. Hopefully whatever was up with him is better because we will need him.

Overall, this game is totally winnable for UAB. They just need to play a complete game and not lax on guarding Omega Harris. Historically these games have been close and UAB does not have the best record at UTEP, but, I think the good guys prevail.

Some of the best games UAB plays in conference always come against MTSU and UTEP. I have had many years taken off of my life watching UAB and UTEP go at it and I can only imagine this game will continue that trend.

Coming out of a crazy week, the Blazers will have to stay focused in what will be an absolutely physical game. Hopefully, they refs do not get in the way because the interior game is going to be something to watch. I expect these two teams to combine for at least 10 blocked shots in the game as UTEP blocks a higher percentage of shots than UAB. UAB is going to have to use their athleticism and bench to keep fresh bodies in the game and continue to go inside without getting in foul trouble. The three point defense the past two games has been outstanding and UAB has to continue that in this game.

I doubted the Blazers last week against a very solid La Tech team. This week, it’ll be tough, but I am not doubting them again.

Score Prediction: UAB 88 UTEP 86 OT
