UAB will wrap up its spring practice and kick off its Spring Game this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Legion Field. Tickets are $5 and parking will be available as well.

The Blazers will finish its first ever spring practice on its new turf field, while construction is almost done on its future operations center.

Even after the two Green and Gold scrimmages last fall, the fans really still don’t know what to expect from this year’s team. Saturday should give us a glimpse of what we can expect when UAB football takes the field for the 2017 season.

One of the main things to watch for is the quarterback battle. AJ Ederly has been the leader in the clubhouse the whole time, but Tyler Johnston, 6A Player of the Year from Spanish Fort, is right behind him. Both will probably get reps with the first team on Saturday, but the battle remains open.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is the depth at running back. Don’t let the absence of DJ Law fool you, the Blazers are deep in the backfield. Kalin Heath, Lucious Stanley, and AJ Brooks can give you carries and move the chains.

The most explosive of the group may be Jonathan Haden who is a transfer from Arizona. The brother of Browns cornerback Joe Haden, Jonathan is most dangerous in the open field. Like they said in The Longest Yard about Nelly, “He makes fast people look not so fast.”

The defense should be a strong suit for the Blazers in the fall. They’ll be led by veteran Shaq Jones, defensive lineman Garrett Marino, and safety Broderick Thomas just to name a few. This defensive unit showed its ability to make plays having 4 interceptions in last Saturday’s closed scrimmage.

This Spring Game is probably one of the most important steps in #theReturn. The two Green and Gold Scrimmages were heavily attended, but they were played on campus, so it will be interesting to see how many fans come out to Legion Field.

Like I have stated in previous articles, Legion Field has 72,000 seats (need for On Campus Stadium is at an all-time high).

Since the announcement that football was coming back fans have been counting down the days for #theReturn, and they better get ready because it is almost here. After Saturday we only have a few more things till kick off on September 2. Summer workouts, construction on the football operations center being complete, and Fall practice.

The ball is now in the fans court. They must back the money they raised and fought so hard for the football team to come back. They must show up — no other way to put it. Students must show up — no other way to put it.

The fans better be there because the Blazers are ready for this Spring Game. See everyone Saturday at 1.
