UAB baseball was able to pick up a much needed win against Charlotte last weekend to remain just two games back of a spot in the C-USA Tournament.
Unfortunately, the third game of the series last weekend was cut short due to bad weather. UAB was down 3-0 with the bases loaded in the sixth when the game was cancelled.
However, they’ve picked up some momentum this week with wins over Samford and Alabama State.
They’ll need every bit of that momentum as they face Old Dominion this weekend back at Young Memorial Field.
The Monarchs are 30-13, 14-7 on the season and are on the verge of earning an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament.
They took 2-of-3 from Marshall last weekend dropping the third game by a score of 2-1 after combining for 30 runs in the first two games of the series.
They are hitting .291 as a team led by Jared Young at .379, Vinnie Pasquantino at .358 and Kyle Battle at .350. Zach Rutherford is also hitting a solid .335.
Young leads the team with 7 home runs, 46 runs scored and 9 stolen bases. Rutherford leads the team in RBI with 44 and is second in stolen bases with seven.
The UAB pitching staff will have a difficult time keeping this offense off the board as they average 7.1 runs per game.
Adam Bainbridge, most likely the Saturday starter, has put together an impressive resume this year to be considered for C-USA Pitcher of the Year. He’s 7-1 in 11 starts with a 1.79 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 75.1 innings pitched.
Sam Sinnen got the start on Friday last week for Old Dominion. He has a 5.31 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 61 innings. John Wilson will most likely get a start this weekend with his 3.41 ERA in 58 innings this year.
This is not a dominate pitching staff. They are last in the league in strikeouts, so hopefully UAB’s offense will stay hot through the weekend and put the ball in play.
Pierce Ressmeyer has been one of the hottest UAB bats lately as he’s raised his average up over .300 to give the Blazers three players with an average over .300.
Thomas Johns has also given the offense some punch lately with a couple of home runs.
Hopefully the offense is hitting its stride as UAB tries to make a push for the C-USA Tournament down the stretch.
