Hello and welcome back to the film room. Today’s feature film is a game played in Columbia, South Carolina between the Gamecocks and the La Tech Bull Dogs two weekends ago. Will Muschamp pulled a rabbit out of his rear end and stole this game away from La Tech, 17-16. If nothing else the close loss for the Bull Dogs show us that they are the real deal and have weapons all over the place. Let’s have a look at the highlights.
Right from the get-go Tech makes it very clear that their defense is up to the task of stopping a SEC offense. On the first drive they hold South Carolina to a field goal which the ultimately miss. The third down before the kick was a bit of foreshadowing of how dominate the Bull Dogs would be on third down for the majority of the game.
This blitz is gutsy and shows they trust their secondary.
Tech takes over on downs and puts together a nice drive that ended in a rare missed field goal. J’Mar Smith was protected really well in empty sets. We get our first look at the Tulane transfer Teddy Veal here. He is a stud.
The cameraman was a bit slow on this next play but it gives you an idea of what J’Mar can do if you don’t contain him in the pocket or bring him down when you have the chance.
Fast forward to the second quarter where Tech leads by a field goal. The two defenses have been putting together bend but don’t break performances. Below is another third down that Tech brings the heat.
Tech gets pinned down deep after the South Carolina punt but J’Mar shows off his arm strength with this next pass. Tech’s offensive line has been stellar.
The second quarter plays on and Tech is still holding on to their 3-0 lead. Again on third down Tech gets the stop and the interception.
As the first half draws closer to an end Tech finally gets some more points on the board going up 6-0. Their kicker is one of the best in the country and puts them in scoring position once they cross midfield. He was pure from 52 yards out.
To end the first half Tech once again gets aggressive on third down and shuts down South Carolina.
J’Mar is a pass first quarterback but they do have design draws and options for him to keep it. Not often though.
The following two clips show Teddy Veal going to work. They use him all over the place.
Another reciever weapon for them is the beast Cam McKnight who runs like a deer and weighs 230. They use him in a goal line wildcat package as well.
In one of the earlier clips Tech blitzed from their corner and got the sac thanks to their freshman Amik Robertson. He’s legit and will knock your head off if given the chance.
Tech held on to their 13-0 lead in to the fourth quarter before the wheels fell off and South Carolina came roaring back. The link below shows how it all ended for the Bull Dogs.
