UAB football heads back out on the road in week eight as it takes on Charlotte. We’ll go over some keys to victory for the Blazers this weekend.
After some emotional wins at home, UAB is due for a letdown game on the road. Hopefully Coach Clark will have the boys focussed this weekend in what should be a pretty easy win against an 0-7 Charlotte team.
Here are a few things UAB will have to do this weekend to win:
- Don’t beat themselves: In all honestly, the only way UAB loses this game is if they beat themselves. They are much more talented, and healthy, than the 49ers. The Blazers are averaging 71.7 penalty yards per game, compared to 59.3 from their opponents. That is not a great stat for UAB, and something that needs to be corrected. The other glaring problem is on special teams. The Blazers have had two extra points blocked and a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown this year. You can’t have those types of mistakes on the road and expect to win ball games.
- Throw the football: Charlotte has the worst pass defense in Conference USA, so this is a perfect time to let A.J. Erdely sling the football around the field. It’s also a good time for some other receivers and tight ends to get involved in the passing game. I’m sure the coaching staff will continue to establish the run game early, but I think it would be a missed opportunity if you don’t let Erdely get at least 25 pass attempts this game.
- Disciplined defense: Neither of Charlotte’s quarterbacks have proven they can throw the ball effectively, but both have the ability to run. While we should be able to add an extra defender in the box, the defense still has to remain disciplined and keep an eye on the quarterback. If you are over aggressive their quarterbacks will burn you. I think this could be a big week for our defense as long as they play disciplined, assignment football.
- Don’t turn the ball over: The only way Charlotte stays in this game is if we give it to them. The offense can’t get lazy and turn the ball over multiple times, setting them up for easy points. You can say this in every game, but if you’re looking for an easy win this weekend, then we need to hold onto the football.
That’s really it for this week’s game. If UAB doesn’t turn the ball over and plays disciplined defense, I think we come away with an easy road win on Saturday.
