UAB football got their first road win of the year on Saturday by beating Southern Miss 30-12 in Hattiesbrug, Miss.
The Blazers finally put a complete game together and took care of business against a formal rival. This win was huge as it puts UAB back in the race for the West.
The Blazers out-gained Southern Miss 417-347, and didn’t turn the ball over once.
A.J. Erdely passed for 208 yards on 16-29 passing with a touchdown. But it was Spencer Brown who took center stage as he rushed the ball 33 times for 209 yards and a score.
The UAB defense may have had it’s best performance of the year holding Southern Miss to just 12 points, and limiting running back Ito Smith to just 36 yards on the ground.
Things didn’t start out great for UAB as the Golden Eagles scored on their first play from scrimmage. But the UAB offense marched down the field on their first drive of the game and took a 7-6 lead thanks to a blocked extra point.
Southern Miss would add a pair of field goals in the first half and take a 12-7 lead into halftime.
That would be all the scoring for the Golden Eagles as the UAB defense pitched a shutout in the second half, while forcing three 3-and-outs.
Meanwhile, UAB had a 10-play drive to start the second half, which ended in a touchdown giving them a 13-12 lead after failing on the 2-point conversion attempt.
The Blazers had a 13-play drive on their next possession, but Nick Vogel couldn’t connect from 52 yards out.
Still, the UAB offense did a great job of staying on the field and allowing our defense to stay fresh.
On UAB’s first possession in the fourth quarter they scored another touchdown, making it 20-12, but it was still a one-possession game. But on their next drive Vogel kicked a 43-yard field goal to give the Blazers some breathing room.
The UAB defense got a big fourth down stop on Southern Miss’ next possession, and then on the following Golden Eagles’ possession they intercepted a pass for a touchdown to put the game away.
This was by far the best performance we’ve seen from the Blazers all year, and it came on the road no less.
Hopefully this is the team we see the rest of the year as UAB tries to earn a trip to the Conference USA Championship game.
