UAB took an early lead and then relied on a great defensive performance to give them their seventh win of the year in a 24-19 win over UTSA.
The first half couldn’t have gone any better for the Blazers. They got an interception on the second play of the game that set the offense up with very good field position at the UTSA 28-yard line.
After a 12-yard run by Spencer Brown, A.J. Erdely capped off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run giving the Blazers a 7-0 lead.
After a couple of 3-and-outs, UTSA got good field position after a poor punt. However, the UAB defense didn’t break and held them the RoadRunners to a field goal.
On the next possession the Blazers got back to the Spencer Brown run game and drove the ball down the field before Erdely hooked up with Ronnie Turner Jr. on a 6-yard touchdown pass making it 14-3.
On UAB’s next possession they put together a 17 play, 89-yard drive that ended in another Erdely touchdown run.
UAB helped UTSA get three more points before the half with several penalties, but the defense still held them out of the endzone making it 21-6 at halftime.
Defenses ruled the third quarter as neither team scored, and there were three turnovers with UAB giving the ball to UTSA twice.
After doing a good job of bottling up the UTSA quarterback all game, somehow Dalton Sturm broke 20 tackles and scrambled into the endzone from 22 yards out to cut the UAB lead to 21-13.
It looked like UTSA was going to score again on their next drive, but the defense came up with a huge fumble that led to a clutch 48-yard field by Nick Vogel to make it a two-score game again 24-13.
The RoadRunners tacked on a late touchdown to make it 24-19, but failed to get the onside kick.
This was an outstanding performance by the UAB defense from beginning to end. The offense looked great early, but got a little conservative in the second half.
The total yard numbers were 299-265 in favor of UTSA. That’s the second game in a row UAB has been out-gained but won.
A.J. Erdely was just 8-of-13 passing for 49 yards. Spencer Brown finished with 128 yards on 27 carries, but it was Erdely who had 2 rushing touchdowns.
The Blazers will now head to Gainesville next week to face a Gators team that is just 3-6 on the year.
