UAB will come back home for it’s final game of the regular season to face UTEP. We’ll look at some keys to victory this Saturday.
We fell into this trap earlier this year on the road, but not at home against Rice. I expect the team to play more like they did against Rice in this one.
UTEP will probably be the worst team the Blazers play all year, but they still have to play their game to win.
Here are some keys to victory:
- Pour it on early: Just like against Rice, the offense has to pour it on early. In games like this when you should dominate, you can’t allow the underdog to hang around. If the Blazers can put up 28 points by halftime that will kill the spirit of UTEP who is looking to get this season over with as soon as possible.
- Feed the Beast: Spencer Brown was shutdown for the most part against Florida and really just had a terrible game with the fumbles. I look for him to get a lot of carries in this one and build his confidence back up. I would not be surprised if Brown goes for 200-plus yards in this game as UTEP is last in the conference in stopping the run. I really hope the coaching staff just continues to feed Spencer Brown and let him eat.
- Smother them: Despite the points Florida put up, I’ve really loved watching the UAB defense grow throughout the season. They have the chance to put up one of their best performances of the season this weekend — and a shutout is definitely possible. I look for Shaq Jones — and hopefully a healthy Tevin Crews — to show out on Senior Day and smother the UTEP offense.
Just like with the Charlotte and Rice games, as long as we play our game and don’t try to get outside ourselves, this should be an easy win. We’ve seen examples of both, and hopefully our lesson has been learned on playing these types of team.
Saturday should be a great send off for the team and the fans as the Blazers look to roll UTEP for their eighth win of the year.
