The excitement level for UAB athletics is at an all-time high, and for that fans have plenty to be thankful for this holiday season.
When you think back to just one year ago, UAB was without a football team and they had begun a new era in basketball after losing Jerod Haase to Stanford.
There wasn’t much to look forward to except for the future. Well the future is here now, and it looks brighter than ever for UAB athletics.
The football team is on the verge of winning the most games in a single season in program history, and are looking to make their first bowl appearance since 2004. And with the majority of that team coming back in 2018, UAB will be one of the favorites to reach the Conference USA Championship Game next year.
On top of that, the program struck a deal with Coach Clark that should keep him around Birmingham for at least a few more years.
We may be looking at the best run in UAB football ever!
I know the basketball team fell flat in the Cayman Islands Classic this week, but this is still one of the most talented teams we’ve ever seen at UAB, and I guarantee you they will be in the hunt for the Conference USA Championship come March.
In the past five years UAB has won a conference championship in both baseball and basketball. And as long as Coach Clark is around, I predict we’ll win one in football over the next three years.
Even though baseball has had back-to-back losing seasons, we’ve witnessed one of the best players to ever come through the university in Brewer Hicklen. This past spring he became the highest drafted UAB baseball player ever when he was taken in the seventh round of the MLB Draft.
Of course, there is so much more to life than sports, so don’t forget that as you spend time with your family and friends this weekend.
But you can rest assured that we are in the brightest days of UAB athletics, so make sure you enjoy the ride.
From everyone at The Daily Dragon, we hope you have a great Thanksgiving.
